Science

Science not only provides the foundation for understanding the world around us but the ability to use our imaginations to look into the future with curiosity. Science will be taught in a way that nurtures a lifelong love of learning through purposeful, accurate and imaginative lessons.

Intent

We have designed and sequenced our Science curriculum so that children acquire a sense of curiosity and excitement for scientific learning and discovery. We want children to understand and recognise the importance of Science in all aspects of their daily lives.

We hope to encourage them to ask, and find the answers to, their questions, using an appropriate process of enquiry and extend their scientific knowledge beyond the classroom.

Woven throughout our Science curriculum, the children will be taught that sustainability is the key to the future of planet Earth.  By learning about harnessing our natural resources and looking after all life that exists, children become empowered and responsible citizens, who strive to look after our world.

Implementation

We teach the disciplines of Physics Chemistry and Biology, covering the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum. We build on learning from prior year groups to ensure progression. 

Teachers use age-appropriate techniques to inspire all of our children to develop their knowledge and understanding through a combination of open-ended enquiries. Through our teaching, children develop skills of prediction, hypothesising, experimentation, investigation, observation, measurement, interpretation and communication.

 Impact

Children can retain knowledge that is relevant to Science with a real -life context. Children ask questions, reflect on knowledge and work collaboratively to investigate and experiment; are resilient when outcomes challenge their ideas. Children can articulate their understanding of concepts and reason scientifically, using rich scientific vocabulary.

Through a range of enrichment opportunities within the school grounds, visitors and trips, children develop their understanding of how science has changed our lives and that it is vital to the world’s future.

We aspire for all children achieve at least age-related expectations in Science at the end of their cohort year.
